Sustainability

A More Sustainable Future

Levin is committed to sustainability throughout our business — which not only includes our transition from fossil fuels to the movement of more sustainable, renewable commodities, but also in our long-term business, safety, employment, environmental and community-engagement practices.

  • The Levin Richmond Terminal's waterfront site is a vital asset for the region and our company, facilitating the import and export of important commodities. Access to the Bay is a precious resource and we're committed to using it carefully and maintaining it well.

Our company has provided bulk marine terminal services and jobs here since 1980, with consistently high environmental, safety, and maintenance standards, which will continue and improve through and beyond our transition from fossil fuels to more sustainable cargo.

  • A planet-friendly future means striving to always improve the way we do our jobs every day. In line with Levin Richmond Terminal's commitment to environmental stewardship, our personnel are being trained in pollution prevention, storm water management, and environmental best management practices.

  • The Levin Richmond Terminal operations has long recycled its wastewater and enables some of our customers to recycle waste products into remanufactured new products, reducing waste, and keeping valuable materials out of landfills. Recycling contributes to a circular economy where everything is a resource rather than waste and is one of the most important practices we can undertake to improve the environment.

  • We're committed to the long-term environmental health of the marine terminal, which has and will continue to be an integral part of West Contra Costa County. We're continually looking for ways to improve operations by reducing diesel emissions through new technology and equipment. We also use recycled water retention and treatment programs in all our yard areas. These programs allow us to recycle the captured water in our daily operations.

We're adding covered conveyor systems and are continually improving cargo containment techniques to assist in keeping the marine terminal clean with minimal dust.

In addition, our sister company, the Richmond Pacific Railroad Corporation, received Moyer Grants from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) to purchase three locomotives conforming to the highest EPA emissions standards — the cleanest locomotives currently in operation — which means we own almost 40% of the cleanest locomotives in operation in railroads of our size in California today.
